# Passport API access

As a Passport Member, you request API access, connect your machine to the Passport Proxy, and call APIs using secret references instead of real secrets.

## Request API access

[Request access to call an API](/passport/use/request-api-access/) your team has made available. When your request is approved, Passport issues you a secret reference you can use to send authenticated requests without handling the underlying secret.

## Connect to the Passport Proxy

[Connect your machine to the Passport Proxy](/passport/use/connect-to-proxy/) using the Passport CLI. This is a one-time setup per machine.

## Call an API with Passport

Once you're connected, [send authenticated API requests](/passport/use/call-an-api-with-passport/) using secret references instead of real secrets, from the Passport CLI or external clients like curl and scripts.
